Our back yard

Our back yard by the Canal du Midi, February 2009

What’s the Evening Hérault about?

It’s one of those Languedoc blogs  about anything from les taxes and les taxis to le rugby and le Ryanair, pétanque and Irish road bowling.

It’s about Irish-Hérault connections and being part-time émigrés, splitting our time between Ireland and the Languedoc, the “Cinderella of the South” or the “poor man’s Provence” (as they say).

It’s about links, guides, fun stuff, practical advice, history, language, cuisine (a lot of cuisine), reading, odd musings, culture and life in general in the Hérault (and Dublin too). Read the FAQs for more.

Who are we?

The two of us currently spend about a quarter of the year escaping from rainy, windswept Ireland to live life in the slow lane in our sunny little shack in Languedoc-Roussillon.

It will be our place to retire one day, but in the meantime it’s a great breathing space from all the boom-to-bust madness of Ireland at the moment.

What’s our village?

It’s a secret. Not tying the blog down to just one village means we stay more general, there aren’t loads of boring pictures of kids and pets, and you might find it more useful. If you know our area you’ll spot the clues anyway.

What about our French?

Yes, if there are any mistakes in the French in this blog, give us a break. We’re making the effort, n’est ce pas?

Finally, if you come across any other Irish blogs about this part of France, drop us a line at the end of this page.

It is. Sort of. Our front yard actually. Well, 20 yards away from it.

Hi, have you heard of my radio programme from Divergence FM? It also goes out live on the Web – Top-Up.

    Hi Brian

No, I’m afraid to say that our radio is normally stuck on France Bleu or a classical station that I can never remember the name of. Maybe you have a link?

Hey, great job. I’m an American (with Irish ancestry) making wine near Carcassonne. I just started a little blog about the Languedoc http://love-that-languedoc.com and the aggregator on my news site flagged you guys as a good blog that talks about Languedoc wine. Imagine my surprise!

Please drop me a line sometime. I’d love to have you over to taste some wines.

    Hi Ryan

Yep, we like a glass of Picpoul (or two) and a blanquette de limoux and a local red such as a Fitou, but we are no experts. So thanks for the very kind words but even with a quick first glance at your website it’s obvious that we’re complete wine novices compared to you guys! Will be in touch.
